en route is a love song to the city, unfolding places, personal and private, present and past.

Engaging with audio, mobile phones, walking, urban streetscapes, and the city, en route invites you on a walking and listening journey – both inward and outward – across the thoroughfares and back-alleys of Norwich.

Part traveller, witness, and voyeur. As you journey, fragments of narrative, local music, and sound, intertwine with directions, wanderings, observations, and found experiences. The spontaneous choreography of passers-by, streets, alleys, and buildings evoke a city on which to project your own narratives and meanings as perceptions, insights, senses make and remake the city you inhabit.

en route is specially created for each town or city it inhabits.

one step at a time like this is a collaboration between 3 Melbourne contemporary theatre artists Suzanne Kersten, Clair Korobacz and Julian Rickert. Employing an expanded notion of theatre, one step create location-responsive works and audience-centric works. They seek out novel forms of audience engagement via the use of inventive performative platforms in public space and performance buildings – digital, live, and innovative blends. Works are designed to allow audiences to slip seamlessly between real-world locales, virtual worlds and narrative elements. Engaging the co-authoring activity of the audience is a key element of the work.
The company has been commissioned to create works for Sadler’s Wells, Situations UK, Seoul Performing Arts Festival, Singapore International Festival of the Arts, London Olympics Festival, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Arts Centre Melbourne, Arts House, Melbourne Festival and City of Melbourne, among others.

Richard Jordan Productions is a leading London-based multi-award-winning international creative production company led by Norwich-born Artistic Producer Richard Jordan. Described by The Stage newspaper as “one of the UK’s most prolific theatre producers,” since 1998 the company has been driven by a strong social agenda, committed to developing, commissioning, and producing plays and musicals by new and established writers and artists from around the world. Recipient of the TONY, Olivier, and EMMY Awards, the company has produced over 290 productions in 29 countries, including 80 world premieres, producing, and collaborating with many of the world’s leading theatres. In 2022 the company became the first international producers to present work in Ukraine since the outbreak of war with the Russian Federation in a collaboration with the country’s national arts festival which brought art and humanitarian aid into the country. At the Edinburgh Fringe, Richard Jordan Productions is the recipient of 19 Scotsman Fringe First Awards for New Writing – the highest number awarded to any independent producer in the fringe history. In 2016, for his work in East Anglia, Richard was recipient of the Norfolk Arts Award and is an Ambassador of The Garage in Norwich. Richard discovered Australian performance group one step at a time like this in Adelaide in 2009 and since then he has developed, dramaturges, and produces with them all their work worldwide. Creating en route in his home city has been a very personal and beautiful return journey, with special thanks to Suzanne, Julian, Clair, Nirlek, Daniel, NNF, Debbie, Diane, Tammy, Dick, Peter, Damian; this production of en route is for the fine people of Norwich and all those who believed in and encouraged Richard’s theatre dreams growing up here.
